Completely Dreadful

Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real fiasco. We tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to stop a tsunami with a spoon. We're still picking up the shards and feeling the impact of this unmitigated catastrophe.

In the end, you are left with a sense of utter perplexity. You wonder about the purpose of it all. Was this intended to be funny?

Dreadful Day Ever

It all started with my case of terrible hair. I couldn't do it to look right. As I was dashing out the door, I trippedon and spilled all over the floor. To make matters worse, I was completely behind schedule for work.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
